The future of humanity will be determined by targeted carbon regulation: Rae Kwon Chung on the prospects for Green Economy

Recently the member of the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee Rae Kwon Chung did a presentation at the International Forum Green Bridge, which was organized by the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan in Astana. His report was devoted to the main provisions of the Paris Agreement, as well as factors that in the near future will facilitate the transition of the world community to a low-carbon policy.

Today, the questions about the future of an economy, energy, and all countries at large in the new low-carbon reality are getting more acute. On the way to a new eco-future, the world community has already made a big step by signing the Paris Climate Agreement, which entered into force on November 4 last year. It was ratified by 118 countries, which accounts for 75% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The world assumes increased obligations - not to allow the global temperature to raise by more than 2 degrees Celsius by 2100, and to zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by the middle of the century. Thus, humanity has made its choice in favor of green technologies, clean air, climate protection, the widespread use of renewable energy sources (RES) and the solution of environmental problems.

Rae Kwon Chung supports this position. He is sure that today the governments of countries need to be guided by the paradigm of the three "E" - energy, economy and ecology. It is a question of avoiding the practice of burning traditional energy sources, which leads to a constant release of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

"Now there is a paradigm shift, focused on the transition to a low-carbon future. Combustion of hydrocarbons can no longer serve as a guarantee of economic growth - we need a new economic paradigm, investments in renewable energy and a more perfect energy-oriented tax system. It is necessary to move into a new era, where the burning of natural resources can no longer guarantee competitiveness," the expert explained. He stressed that it is carbon markets and carbon pricing that will be one of the key factors determining the success or failure of the world community's efforts to combat climate change. In addition, a significant role in the system of building the paradigm of the three "E", as realized by the scientist, is assigned to the creation of eco-cities.

Water consumption is minimized in eco-cities, cars and other urban transport should be as inoffensive to the air as possible, industry and production meet all environmental standards without containing hazardous substances in production. Recycling of garbage must have high environmental standards where environmental damage is not allowed. Thus, the focal point of eco-cities is to ensure a healthy and high-quality standard of living in the city, in the region, in the country and on the planet.

It should be noted that there are no eco-city projects implemented in Russia right now, as well as their eco-reconstruction. Nevertheless, a number of organizations specializing in environmental housing construction have already come close to their creation.
