On October 2, Sergey Alekseenko, the 2018 Global Energy Prize laureate, Academician at the Russian Academy of Sciences and Head of heat and mass transfer’s laboratory of Institute of Thermophysics of the RAS Siberian Branch, gave a lecture at MISiS University on trends and prospects for the development of energy in the context of thermal solutions. The lecture was held within the framework of the Energy of Knowledge Program of the Global Energy Association.

Sergey Alekseenko (Russia) is an expert in the field of thermal physics, energy and energy conservation. He will receive the Global Energy Prize for preparing the thermal foundations for creating modern energy and energy-saving technologies that allow the design of environmentally friendly thermal power plants. The Global Energy Prize will be granted to him during the Award Ceremonytaking place on October 4, at 2:00 p.m., at the Russian Energy Week Forum.
Touching upon the trends in world energy, the speaker noted that every region of the world had its own way of developing the industry. “Thus, Germany plans that by 2050, 80% of energy generation will come from renewable energy sources, and some countries, for example, France, are ready to completely abandon the use of fossil fuels in the energy sector in the coming years”. Mentioning the global trends, the expert noted strengthening of environmentally friendly and efficient technologies of fossil fuels processing, further development of renewable energy sources, especially solar energy, and the development of effective methods for the conversion and storage of energy, including fuel cells. As for Russia, despite the large reserves of organic raw materials, the effective functioning of the country’s energy system requires a comprehensive revamp of the infrastructure, increase of energy efficiency of the national economy and making reasonable use of renewable energy sources.

According to Sergey Alekseenko, the most promising types of renewable energy sources are solar energy and petrothermal energy sources (utilization of heat from dry rocks lying at depths of 3 to 10 km where the temperature reaches 350 degrees). “Petrothermal energy is the most promising and environmentally friendly line of the world energy development. It will provide access to practically inexhaustible energy resources, while remaining environmentally safe.”

The expert’s lecture was presented as a dialogue between the speaker and the audience. The press conference was moderated by Aleksey Trinchenko, the winner of the 2018 Energy of Breakthrough Competition, Associate Professor at the Atomic and Thermal Power Engineering Department at the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University.

As a recall, the Energy of Knowledge project is a series of interactive lectures given by the laureates of the Global Energy Prize and other prominent energy scholars. The aim of the program is to raise interest in energy issues among young people and to unleash the potential of young researchers within the sector.
