Awarded for an outstanding contribution to nuclear safety enhancement and nuclear facility decommissioning

SHORT BIOGRAPHY

  • 1963: graduated from the technical physics department of Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg (Sweden), where he also received his doctorate in reactor physics in 1968.
  • 1990 – present: member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences. Headed the department of “Basic and Interdisciplinary Sciences”.
  • Is the owner and founder of the SiP Nuclear Consult Company. The company’s headquarters is located in Sweden.

SCIENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Lars G Larsson is a world-famous expert on nuclear power plant safety, the utilization of radioactive waste and the effect of nuclear energy on the environment.
  • Larsson’s research on the environmental impact of nuclear energy proved to be essential in various emergency situations. In particular, Lars G Larsson participated in investigating and reporting on the Three Mile Island Accident in Pennsylvania (United States) in 1979.
  • Was the Deputy Director General at the Swedish Nuclear Power Inspectorate, which was responsible for the safe operation of all of the country’s nuclear sites, and was the head of the office of inspection.
  • Headed the Nuclear Safety Department of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. This department finances the operations and modernization of nuclear power plant safety systems used in both Russia and Central and Eastern Europe.

INTERESTING FACTS

  • Although Lars G Larsson has always lived and worked in Sweden, his best-known achievements are closely connected with Russia. Specifically, he helped to restore normal background radiation in the Russian arctic zone. Russian arctic waters currently contain a large quantity of sunken objects containing radioactive waste; this is the legacy of the Cold War. In 2003, it was decided on an international level that these objects should be eliminated as fully as possible.
  • Much of Lars G Larsson’s work were done in close cooperation with Russian scientist academician A.A. Sarkisov.
