Evgenii Velikhov became the Global Energy Prize laureate in 2006 for development of scientific and engineering foundation for building of the international thermonuclear reactor. The scientist is one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of pulsed power engineering, plasma physics and controlled thermonuclear fusion. He suggested and experimentally put into effect a new type of pulsed high-power magnetohydrodynamic generators, which found application in deep electromagnetic refraction of earth crust. Evgenii Velikhov created unique inductive energy storage units, particularly, the world biggest power complex TIN-900 for power supply of pulsed thermonuclear and modeling facilities. Developed and constructed the biggest in Europe and Asia power plant Angara-5-1 on the basis of forming lines with water insulation. Carried out research on ‘Angara’ which resulted in application of double liner scheme with utilization of radiating Z-pinches on the world largest plants. He is also an initiator of the international project for the development of thermonuclear energy ITER.
Along with Evgenii Velikhov in 2006 the Global Energy Prize laureates became Masaji Yoshikawa (Japan) for scientific contribution to ITER projects and Robert Aymar (France) as well as Evgenii Velikhov for development of scientific and engineering foundation for building of the international thermonuclear reactor. Note that the Global Energy Association continues to accept applications for the Prize in 2020. Applications will be accepted until March 20th, 2020.
