The scenario of large-scale introduction of renewable energy sources will continue, said Danish Professor and Global Energy Prize laureate Frede Blaabjerg during his online lecture to students of the Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University "LETI". "Solar power is fully competitive with fossil today, and its costs continue to fall. In 10 years' time, renewable energy sources will be 100% competitive. Power electronics is enabling the technology," Blaabjerg said.

The scientist noted that the energy paradigms in many countries (e.g., Germany and Denmark) have experienced a significant change from fossil-based resources to clean renewables (e.g., wind turbines and photovoltaics) in the past few decades.

According to Blaabjerg, it is required that the production, distribution and use of the energy should be as technologically efficient as possible.

Professor noted, that some of the most emerging renewable energies — , e.g., wind energy and photovoltaic  are changing character as a major part in the electricity generation by means of power electronics. Issues like technology development, implementation, power converter technologies, and more intelligence into the control of renewables need special attention.

More intelligent systems will be introduced to control renewable energy sources, special attention will be paid to the development of large-scale systems and energy storage technologies will be used more and more,” Blaabjerg said.
