Francesco Profumo (Italy)

The Global Energy Prize International Award Committee member; President, Compagnia di San Paolo.

In 1977 he graduated from the Polytechnic University of Turin, where he studied electrical engineering. From 2003 to 2005 he headed the Engineering Faculty of this university, and in 2005– 2011 he was its Rector. From 1984 to the present – Professor of Electrical Machines and Drives at Department of Energy at the Polytechnic University of Turin. From November 2011 to April 2013 – Minister of Education, University and Research in the Italian Government. In addition to the relevant ministry, the Department of Technological Innovations was also subordinate to him. From 2011 to 2013, he was Chairman of European Space Agency (ESA) Council. From 2011 to 2012 he headed Italian National Research Council (CNR). He was Chairman of the G8 University Summit 2009 (Turin). From 2013 to 2016, he headed the IREN Group, a multifunctional company providing services in the housing and utilities sector. From 2007 to 2012, he served on the board of directors of Unicredit Bank, the newspaper il Sole 24 Ore, the joint-stock company Fidia, the telecommunication company Telecom, and the world’s fifth largest tire manufacturer Pirelli. He was given the title of Honorary PhD by 10 universities in different countries. He has worked in various universities in the world: Argentina, China, Hungary, Albania, Romania, Latvia, USA, Japan, Czech Republic. He was a visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin Madison, Nagasaki University, the Czech Technical University and the University of Cordoba. Currently, Francesco Profumo is a member of the board of directors of largest wireless infrastructure operator in Italy INWIT, the largest Venture Capital firm in Italy Innogest Fund, as well as a company that specializes in consulting, system integration and digital services Reply SpA. He is President of the non-profit research organization Fondazione Bruno Kessler, one of the largest bank foundation in EU Compagnia di San Paolo, President of Business School ESCP – Turin campus, Honorary Professor of Tongji University (China) and Xi’an Jiao Tong University (China). He is a member of Academia Europaea (Physics and Engineering Section), Academy of Science in Italy and the ENI Awards Committee.
