As part of a contract with China’s CNLY company (a subsidiary of the China National Nuclear Corporation CNNC), a division of TVEL had already created a new production section for the fuel. Production will include a start-up delivery and refuelling supplies over the first seven years. “Rosatom’s fuel division is meeting in full its obligations within the framework of Russian-Chinese cooperation in developing the technology of fast reactors,” the company quoted TVEL President Natalia Nikipelova as saying in the statement.
“These are unique projects with fuel coming from a foreign source, a Russian source. China’s first CEFR fast neutron reactor has been operating since 2010 with fuel from the ‘Machinebuilding plant’. And for delivery of fuel to be used in the CFR-600, a team of specialists from the plant and TVEL has successfully completed a hi-tech project to modernise production.”
A key feature of the new production line is its wide application : this equipment will be used to make fuel for China’s CFR-600 and CEFR reactors as well as the Russian BN-600 reactor at the Beloyarsk nuclear power station in the Urals region. Standard production is soon to begin of fuel for the BN-600.
CNLY and TVEL signed the contract to provide fuel for the CFR-600 in December 2018 – within the framework of the agreement on Russian-Chinese cooperation in construction and operation in China of a model fast-neutron reactor.
