Commodities markets open 2022 with two-digit rise
The first month of 2022 turned out to be a turbulent one for commodities markets. Spot prices for thermal coal in the Australian city of Newcastle, the biggest hub in the Asia-Pacific region, rose by 40 % from the beginning of the year (to $244 a tonne), according to Refinitiv data. Brent prices hit $90 in trading, their highest level since October 2014, and the price of gas on Europe’s leading TTF hub shot up over $1,100 per 1,000 cubic metres.
