China completes concrete pouring at world’s first land-based small nuclear power plant

The China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC) has completed pouring concrete into the floor slab of the ACP100 Demo Small Modular Reactor at the Changjiang Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in Hainan Province in southern China. The 125 megawatt (MW) reactor will be commissioned in 2026 and will be able to generate 1 billion kilowatt hours (KWh) of electricity annually, enough to power 526,000 households.

3D-printed hydroelectric dam

China is going to build the Yangqu hydroelectric dam on the Tibetan Plateau using 3D printing. The 180-metre high dam will be built layer by layer using a special-purpose 3D printer, which will be employed in conjunction with trucks, bulldozers, excavators, pavers and rollers controlled by artificial intelligence.

India is going to redouble solar capacity

India is going to commission 30 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind turbines and 50 GW of solar panels, industry magazine Reve reported citing a statement by Raj Kumar Singh, India’s Minister for New and Renewable Energy. The implementation of these plans will allow the country to double its capacity in solar energy, also making it the second largest producer of offshore wind energy in Asia.

Aviation fuel from ammonia

The Australian company Aviation H2 is going to make a test flight with an ammonia-powered aircraft by mid-2023, reports New Atlas, a popular science portal. The substance resulting from synthesis of hydrogen and atmospheric nitrogen can be an alternative to fuel cells whose introduction entails abandonment of turbofan engines and costly replacement of aviation kerosene storage systems.
