The names of the current year’s laureates were announced in July in Khanty-Mansiysk. They are: Viktor Orlov from Russia and two scientists from the United States, Mercouri Kanatzidis and Kaushik Rajashekara.

Viktor Orlov is the laureate in the Conventional Energy nomination, for his fundamental research on development of innovative energy technologies based on the fast-neutron reactors with heavy alloy coolant and a closed fuel cycle.

Mercouri Kanatzidis was chosen in the Non-Conventional Energy nomination, for major advances made in solar energy conversion with the use of novel perovskite halides.

Kaushik Rajashekara is the laureate in the New Ways of Energy Application category, for outstanding contributions to transport electrification and energy efficiency technologies while reducing power generation emissions.

The laureates were determined by an independent International Award Committee, which includes scientists from 11 countries: China, Hungary, India, Japan, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates. The Committee is chaired by Nobel laureate Rae Kwon Chung.

“The choice of the three 2022 laureates of Global Energy Prize is a proof that the Global Energy Prize successfully maintained its independence and scientific neutrality in the promotion of science and technology in the field of energy Innovations. I do congratulate the 20th Anniversary of GEP and would like to express my deep appreciation for the commitment of GEP dedicated to our sustainable energy future,” said Rae Kwon Chung.

The laureates were selected from a short list, which was formed according to the results of an expert analysis of 119 applications received from 43 countries. This is a record-breaking number of applications and participating countries in the history of the award.
