A high-voltage overhead crossing is a section of power lines spanning more than 700 metres over a river or a lake and characterised by higher stability compared to other sections of power lines. The supports of such crossings are usually at least 50 metres tall, although structures of this type can differ greatly in terms of layout, foundation properties and support structure design. Special crossings are an integral part of major energy projects: for instance, by the end of 2022 there were 23 special crossings over the rivers Zeya, Amur and their tributaries in the Amur Region where the Amur Gas Processing Plant is based.
The construction of two special crossings over the Lena River is part of the project for the development of power grid infrastructure of the Eastern Gas Production Centre. Rosseti plans to also put into operation 518 kilometres of new power lines and renovate the 500 kV Ust-Kut substation – the main hub of the Peleduy energy ring linking four regions of Eastern Siberia (Irkutsk Region, Buryatia, Transbaikal Territory and Yakutia). Energy workers will erect a total of 1,957 steel lattice supports treated with galvanised anti-corrosion coating and will also install next-generation compacted cables resistant to icing and wind. The overall amount of investments will total RUB 28 billion that will also be used to equip the power lines with lightning protection cable to transmit technological information.
The Kovyktinskoye gas and condensate field is Eastern Siberia’s largest: it contains 1.8 trillion m3 of gas and 65.7 million t of gas condensate. After the field reaches its design capacity, its annual output will total 27 billion m3 of gas. Since December 2022, feedstock from the field has been fed into the Power of Siberia gas trunkline via the Kovykta – Chayanda section linking the Kovyktinskoye and Chayandinskoye fields, and then transported to the Amur GPP where methane gets separated from components (ethane, propane, butane, helium) valuable for the petrochemical sector. Methane is shipped further to China while helium goes to a hub in the Amur Region so as to be later offloaded to Russian and foreign consumers.
