The Akkuyu nuclear power plant will consist of four power units with an aggregate capacity of 4.8 gigawatts (GW). The first reactor is expected to enter operation in 2024.
“By 2035, we plan to reach 7.2 GW in capacity, and we plan to increase this capacity to 20 GW by 2050. To achieve that, we will need to build four reactors in Sinop and another four in Thrace, after which we will probably turn our attention to small modular reactors, which are essential to achieving further decarbonisation of the Turkish economy,” the minister noted.
In addition to Rosatom, companies from South Korea and China are also showing interest in the NPP project in Sinop.
