The Association operates the International Global Energy Prize, and 53 scientists became the laureates of this prize starting from 2003. The laureates are chosen by the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee uniting 20 scientists from 14 countries: Bolivia, China, Cote d’Ivoire, Hungary, India, Japan, Republic of Korea, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, UAE, UK, and USA. Hortensia Jiménez Rivera, the Executive Director of the Bolivian Nuclear Energy Agency (ABEN) is one of the Committee members.
The Association also awards the Honorary Diploma to Russian and international scientists, and several researchers from Latin America were among them in recent years: Ruben Chaer, professor of the University of the Republic in Montevideo, Head of the Electricity Market Office of Uruguay; Vicente Horacio Lescano, the researcher from the National Technological University (Argentina); Isolda Costa, Director of Brazilian Institute of Energy and Nuclear Research (IPEN).
The Energy of Words International media competition is another project of the Association for incentivising journalists, bloggers and information agency employees specialising in covering the key events and trends in energy sphere. One of the nominations of the competition is for authors of the best publications about energy from foreign countries. In 2023, journalists from Columbia – Shirley Acosta Licero and Mónica Vargas León – joined the group of winners of this contest.
“The development of international science and education projects is one of the key tasks of Global Energy Association. Latin America is one of the important areas for us – a unique region, where great experience in producing fossil fuel is combined with wide use of low-carbon energy sources. We will be happy to receive new applications from Latin American journalists to participate in the Energy of Words International Media Competition, which will finish on 1 September 2024. The scientists, in due turn, will have an opportunity to put forward their colleagues for the next nomination cycle of the Global Energy Prize”, Sergey Brilev, the President of Global Energy Association, said in his speech during the event.
“Russia and Latin America have great potential for mutually beneficial cooperation in the energy sphere. It implies construction of mini and micro hydropower plants, using fossil fuel, geothermal energy development, commissioning of new nuclear reactors including with the purpose of resolving the energy shortage problem in a number of countries in this region. These topics may become the foundation for joint hi-tech projects”, Tatiana Mashkova, CN CEPLA Director General, said.
