Belarus seeking to cover up to 40% of its electricity consumption by nuclear generation

Belarus will aim to generate up to 40% of electricity it consumes at nuclear power plants, Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Viktor Karankevich said as he spoke at the session on “Global Energy as the Foundation of Economic Growth and Well-Being: In Search of Balance”. The session, moderated by Global Energy Association President Sergey Brilev, took place on September 26, 2024 in the course of the Russian Energy Week international forum.

“In 2023, with two power units committed, the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant supplied 28% of the country’s total electricity consumption. This year, our 9 month consumption amounted to 12.5 bn kWh, already exceeding the yearly figure of 2023,” V. Karankevich remarked.

“We are currently working to approach the target of covering 40% of domestic demand by nuclear power,” the vice-premier added.

According to V. Karankevich, electricity demand is driven up by the development of e-mobility.

“The country’s electric vehicle fleet is growing. Emphasis is placed on development of public transport systems that use domestically manufactured vehicles. A positive step in this direction is the implementation of two projects in the cities of Borisov and Shklov. In Shklov, the whole fleet was electrified, and the next iteration will be in the city of Novopolotsk,” V. Karankevich said.
