The prize fund of the award totals 39 million roubles.
According to the Statute on the Prize, self-nomination is not allowed. Applications can be initiated by scientists, researchers and representatives of academic organisations ready to provide detailed justifications for the application, as well as a list of the candidate’s research papers and key merits.
The call for applications, which lasts for 110 days, represents the first stage of the nomination cycle. Received submissions will be assessed by independent experts according to a fixed set of criteria, including scientific novelty and practical value. Fifteen of the best applications receiving the highest score (five applications in each category) will make the short list from which the International Committee led by Nobel laureate Rae Kwon Chung will select the winners.
“In recent years, applications have continued to come mostly from the Northern Hemisphere: Russia, Europe, China, the United States. There is a logic to this: historically, it is in the North of our planet that most of the leading research centers have been concentrated. At this juncture, however, this proves that the Global Energy Association has managed to maintain the suprapolitical nature of the scientific dialogue. Still, we expect an increase in the number of applications from developing countries and regions, including South America, which is the world leader in the use of renewables, and Africa, where solutions for off-grid generation are in high demand and the potential for ramping up the production of oil, gas and coal has not yet been exhausted,” said Sergey Brilev, President of the Global Energy Association.
The names of the laureates will be announced in the summer of 2025. The award ceremony will be part of the Russian Energy Week, an international forum that will be held in Moscow from October 15 to 17, 2025.
