Africa is rich in energy resources, including coal, solar, and other renewable options. The challenge lies in harnessing these resources sustainably. Advancements in technology present new opportunities, and the conversation is increasingly shifting towards sustainability and the transition to green energy.
Speaking at the Regional to Global: Africa conference on January 30, 2025, in Port Louis, Mauritius, Cynthia Angweya-Muhati emphasized the urgency of these solutions:
“Today, approximately 600 million people in Africa still lack access to electricity. One major barrier is the high cost of traditional grid expansion. As a result, off-grid and mini-grid solutions—such as solar energy—have gained significant traction in recent years. These decentralized solutions are proving effective, adaptable, and vital for a sustainable energy future in Africa.”
She further highlighted key challenges affecting the sector:
“Logistical constraints continue to hinder new investment in the power industry. Moreover, many countries struggle to integrate the necessary elements for success—technology, investment, and infrastructure—making it essential to foster an enabling environment for sustainable energy development.”
