Solar energy in Africa is unlikely to be available without financial instruments

Off-grid generation technologies alone are not enough to improve electricity availability in remote areas of Africa. There is a need for financial instruments that allow consumers to pay for PV modules after installation. This opinion was expressed at the Regional to Global conference by Swinage Chikwedze, member of the board of Sustenergy Pvt.

Founded in 2020, Sustenergy Pvt is engaged in installing solar panels for consumers in the residential, industrial and services sectors. In addition to installing photovoltaic modules, Sustenergy Pvt engineers design autonomous power systems that allow the most efficient use of generating capacity. “We are working with financial institutions to make solar panels available to those who do not have sufficient funds to purchase equipment at once,” Chikwedze noted.

According to Chikwedze, the training of technical specialists is also important: in recent years, Sustenergy Pvt has conducted training programs for 170 engineers who use the acquired knowledge to build autonomous power supply systems.

According to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), installed PV capacity in Zimbabwe almost tripled between 2020 and 2023 (from 14 MW to 41 MW).
