Abukuma is a part of international consortium Fukushima Fukko Furyoku LLC, which comprises nine companies headed by Sumitomo Corporation. The objective of this project is to develop and operate on-shore wind power parks in Fukushima prefecture suffering from the shortage of energy supply after the major accident at Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant in 2011.
Abukuma wind farm will supply energy to 120,000 Japanese households promoting the economic revival and improving the energy sustainability of the region. According to the 7th National Energy Balance Plan of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, the total share of resumable energy sources (RES) in the energy mix of the country should grow from 40% to 50% by 2040.
GE Vernova intends to make a meaningful contribution into such growth. Its wind power business all over the world includes about 57,000 turbines of over 120 GW total capacity. According to the announced plans of the company, the wind generation capacities in Japan will make about 1.8 GW. This is equivalent to approximately 40% of the installed capacity of Fukushima-1 NPP before it was shutdown.
“From the decarbonization prospects standpoint, we believe that this project will help Fukushima to take the lead on the global arena in introducing resumable energy sources”, said Hirano Takayuki, the representative of Fukushima Fukko Furyoku.
