Cuba plans to increase the share of renewable energy sources in its energy mix from the current 4% to 17% by the end of 2026, according to a speech made by Ramses Montes, Director of National Energy Policy and Strategy at the Cuban Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM), at the International Earth Science Convention.

As before, the country also plans to meet 24% of its power demand through renewables by 2030 and to transition to total carbon neutrality by 2050.

In order to implement these plans, Cuba will need to build at least 55 solar power plants by the end of next year, raising their number to 92 by 2028.

Energy transition has critical importance to Cuba. Today, the share of conventional energy resources in the country’s energy mix stands at 94.3%, of which 60% is represented by oil and coal imported from other countries. In the meantime, Cuba is constantly facing total power outages on a national scale.
