We regret to inform that Eduard Petrovich Volkov, an outstanding scholar in the sphere of thermal power engineering, the Global Energy Award laureate, our expert, tutor and comrade, departed his life on 04 June. He was 86 years old.
Eduard Petrovich was born on 18 July 1938, in Novo-Chaykino settlement of Donetsk Region. In 1961 he graduated Moscow Energy Institute with a degree of thermal power engineer and once and for all twisted his fortune with this sphere of science. Having started his professional career at the Thermal Power Plants Department of Moscow Energy Institute, he passed all the way of assistant to the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs making a significant contribution to preparing engineering and research specialists.
Between 1986 and 2016 Eduard Petrovich headed the Energy Institute named after G.M. Krzhizhanovsky. Some key solid fuel processing methods including bituminous shale pyrolysis were developed and introduced under his guidance. Owing to his works, both pilot plants and launch of the biggest plant in the world to process one million tons of shale per annum. His special focus was on environmentally friendly combustion of fuel, on developing and implementing straight-flow swirl burner; he also participated in developing the thermal power engineering strategy for Russia.
For his outstanding merits he was awarded the USSR State Award, two awards of the RF Government in the sphere of science and technology, the Krzhizhanovsky award of the Russian Academy of Sciences. His achievements were marked with high-status orders including the Order for Merit to Fatherland Fourth Class, the Order of Alexander Nevsky, the Order of Honor and the Order of the Badge of Honor.
In 2008, he became the Global Energy Award laureate for theoretical underpinning, creating and commercialization of the technology for producing synthetic fuel from bituminous shale and oil sand.
His scientific heritage is truly huge: dozens of thousands of academic papers and monographs, dozens of grateful disciples, numerous Doctors and Candidates of Sciences being among them. His studies continue to benefit the energy sector, and his disciples continue to promote his intellectual arguments and human principles.
The Global Energy Association extends its sincere condolences to the family members and dear ones of Eduard Petrovich. His memories will stay forever in our hearts and in the Russian and world history of global energy sciences.
