The 2025 Global Energy Prize laureate in the New Ways of Energy Application category for outstanding contributions to the development, creation and fundamental research of plasma technologies and pulsed energy

Head of research, Institute for Electrophysics and Electric Power, Russian Academy of Sciences

Prof. Khomich graduated from the Department of Radio Engineering and Cybernetics of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in 1975. In 1980, he defended his candidate thesis at the Lebedev Physical Institute of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1990, he became a doctor of physico-mathematical sciences, and in 1992 was conferred the rank of professor in laser physics. He has an extensive scientific career spanning over 50 years. Prof. Khomich came a long way from a laboratory assistant to head of research of the Institute for Electrophysics and Electric Power and academician-secretary in the Department of Energy, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanics, and Control Processes of Russian Academy of Sciences. Prof. Khomich is the founder of power laser optics. He was the first to use porous structures and heat-transfer agents (including liquid-metal ones) for cooling energetically strained elements and to propose diamond films as their coatings, as well as highly porous materials for creating large-sized elements. He also carried out fundamental research, developed and created electrophysical installations and new plasma technological processes for the recycling and destruction of highly toxic, medical and solid household waste. The developed new plasma technologies are aimed at solving urgent problems of ecology and environmental protection. Prof. Khomich is a member of the RAS Presidium and bureau of DEMEMCP RAS, a member of the Scientific Council on Electrophysics, Power Energetics, and Electrical Engineering of RAS, is a chair of the Dissertation Council and the Academic Council of IEE RAS. Within his career, he was awarded with Order of Alexander Nevsky, P. N. Yablochkov Prize of RAS, Order “For Merit to the Fatherland”, French Order of Academic Palms and other honours.
