Professor José Heráclito Zagal of the University of Chile (Santiago, Chile), a Global Energy Prize shortlisted nominee and recipient of an Honorary Diploma of our Association, has been bestowed the Linstead Career Award for Lifetime Achievements in the field of Phthalocyanine Chemistry. This international prize recognizes fundamental contributions to the study of metal porphyrins and metal phthalocyanines—key organic molecules underlying critical biological processes, including oxygen transport.
The biennial award is conferred by the international Society of Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines, and José H. Zagal is the first recipient from Latin America. The nomination papers describe the scientist as “the most outstanding electrochemist in the region.”
The award ceremony will be held in Kyoto, Japan, during the 14th International Conference on Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines (ICPP14).
Last year, José H. Zagal was shortlisted for the Global Energy Prize, in acknowledgement of his research on the rational design of new low-cost electrocatalytic materials for molecular oxygen reduction in fuel cells. He became the fourth Latin American scientist to be shortlisted in the prize’s history spanning over more than two decades.
In September 2025, José Heráclito Zagal was awarded an Honorary Diploma by Sergey Brilev, President of the Global Energy Association.
