UTE, the state-owned power company of Uruguay, started the construction of a 100 MW solar power plant Melo in the Cerro-Largo department. The plant will become the largest facility of this type in the country, which already now almost fully meets the requirements for electric energy through the use of renewable energy sources (RES).
The project is being implemented in partnership with the Uruguayan company Teyma and the Spanish Prodiel. Those are responsible for design and construction of the plant, as well as will handle its operation and maintenance for the first two years.
Investments into the project exceed USD 75 mln. Within the framework of the construction, it is planned to install about 140 thousand solar panels and to create a new 150 kV electric energy transmission line.
When put into operation, the plant will be able to provide electric energy for up to 64 thousand households, which will bolster the position of Uruguay even more as one of the leaders in the share of RES in the energy balance.
