As part of its visit to the Republic of Tatarstan for the announcement of the Global Energy Prize laureates, the Global Energy Association delegation visited the campus of the Higher School of Petroleum (HSP) in Almetyevsk – a contemporary center for scientific and educational activities that originated from the Almetyevsk State Petroleum Institute. The campus forms a unified architectural space covering a total area of 15.5 hectares, comprising an academic and laboratory building, a research laboratory building, student dormitories, a sports center, a cultural center, a hotel, and residential quarters.
The official opening of the Higher School of Petroleum Research and Education Center took place on February 1, 2024. The ceremony was attended via video link by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who described the Higher School of Petroleum as “one of the most promising and best universities in the country.”
As a campus representative explained, the core concept of the project is “to bring together science, education, and production on a single platform.”
The delegation visited numerous specialized classrooms. One of these was a well-workover classroom, where students practice hands-on skills using equipment that closely replicates real-world conditions. “All the equipment is close to the real thing, which helps students at a later stage solve technological operations in production without mistakes,” the guide explained.
A distinctive feature of HSP’s educational approach is its practice-oriented model. Students devote the initial part of the day to learning principles, and the subsequent period to tackling practical oilfield development projects in real-world scenarios. “We train ready-made teams that may come in and immediately start working on the projects companies need.” HSP is the only university that hosts two advanced engineering schools – one in biotechnology and the other one in petroleum engineering. The university ranks first among 20 Russian universities participating in the program, including the Moscow State University and St. Petersburg State University.
The campus architecture is symbolic, with colors and shapes inspired by the industry. The academic building’s facade resembles an open book on one side, as a symbol of knowledge, and oil-bearing strata on the other, reflecting the university’s specialization. The campus also houses an official HSK Chinese language testing center, opening up opportunities for international cooperation and language internships.
