On July 13, the delegation of the Global Energy Association visited the legendary Romashkino oil field – one of the world’s largest supergiant fields, whose discovery became a turning point in the history not only of Tatarstan but of the entire country. The field is located 70 km from Almetyevsk, near the village of Romashkino (Timyashevo). By international classification, it is a supergiant ranking among the world’s twenty largest fields.
As guide Mikhail Lykov explained, the story of its discovery began in the post-war period. In 1946, the Ministry of the Oil Industry decided to drill exploration well No. 3 here. “There were many skeptics because previously drilled wells had not yielded any results. But the geologists insisted, and it was the right decision.”
On July 25, 1948, during testing of the well, a powerful gusher of oil was obtained with a flow rate of more than 120 tons per day. “Drilling began after the war – the nation required substantial oil supplies, along with machinery to operate. And the country needed money,” noted Mikhail Lykov.
