RECOGNISING OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN ENERGY

The Global Energy Prize annually honors outstanding achievements in energy research and technology from around the world that are helping address the world’s various and pressing energy challenges.

Energy of Knowledge at MPEI

Rae Kwon Chung, Steven Griffiths and Thomas Blees, the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee members, will give a lecture on the actual global energy issues at National Research University MPEI on June 6, 2018. A series of their speeches will be held within the framework of the Energy of Knowledge program of the Global Energy Association. Starting at 10 a.m.

-“The Energy of Knowledge program is a unique opportunity for Russian students to communicate with experts of such a global level as experts of the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee. We are convinced that their experience and professional skills not alone help to attract the attention of our youth to the global energy issues but can also inspire them to solve the industry problems” – is convinced Alexander Ignatov, acting president of the Global Energy Association. - "We specially invite them to Russia, we show young scientists an inspiring example and give the opportunity to get the most advanced knowledge".

The Energy of Knowledge at National Research University MPEI will be devoted to the search for optimal solutions to the decarbonization and digitization of the global energy system.

In particular, Rae Kwon Chung (South Korea), UN Secretary-General`s High-level Expert and Leaders Panel (HELP) on water and disasters, Adviser to the Chair will present the topic “Econometric modelling for deep de-carbonization”. Rae Kwon Chung is the lead author of the report of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, and an active supporter of the "green growth" concept. In his speech the expert will answer why sustainable growth requires a radical change in political and economic thinking, how the decarbonization policy affects economic growth and how much the introduction of a carbon tax is an economically viable solution.

Steven Griffiths (UAE), Senior Vice President for Research and Development at Khalifa University of Science and Technology will talk about the increasing role of digital elements in the energy sector and the impact of the 4th Industrial Revolution on the power sector. Students of National Research University MPEI will learn how the structure of energy in the digital world will change. In the agenda of the speech - discussion of the influence of "smart cities", artificial intelligence, blockchain, robotics technology and technologies of augmented reality on the energy system of the future.

In his turn Thomas Blees (USA), President of the Scientific Council on Global Initiatives (SCGI), an international consultant in the field of energy sphere, will share his opinion on promising nuclear technologies, which he believes will prevail in the energy sector in the coming decades. He will also talk about Russian nuclear piles and those technological solutions that can be exported. Note that, despite the fact that the issue of widespread use of nuclear energy is sensitive to lots of people, Thomas Blees is convinced that this is the "green" solution for the existing energy problems in the world.

Besides main reports’ presentation, the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee members will present their forecasts on technological development of Russia's fuel and energy complex in the context of world trends until 2030.

Recall that the “Nadezhnaya Smena” foundation is developing a similar forecast on the same topic. The solution development takes place in the format of competition among the teams of specialized universities and industry companies. As a result, 39 teams will present their ideas at the Russian Energy Week International Forum within the framework of the youth day. Thus, the Global Energy Association’s experts assisted the participants of the competition to provide a comprehensive overview of global trends in the fuel and energy sector.

It is worth pointing out that in addition to the students of MPEI, students of leading technical universities from 30 regions of Russia and the CIS countries can join the lecture. A video communication will be organized specially for them, which will allow not only to follow the lecture in real time, but also to participate in the discussion. The broadcast will be carried out on the Youtube channel of the Global Energy Prize.

At the end of the lecture, a Q&A session will be held, and the author of the most interesting question, according to the speakers, will receive a gift from the Global Energy Association: a book published on the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the Global Energy Prize. The book is called “The Global Energy Prize: tribute to those who changed the world”. The heroes of this book are energy scientists: physicists, chemists, engineers, geologists, designers. All of them made breakthrough discoveries or developments in nuclear power engineering, heat engineering, semiconductors and development of non-traditional or renewable resources and were awarded the Global Energy Prize. They are people of a global level of tasks that they managed to solve.
