On May 27, Dr. Steven Griffith, member of the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee, executive vice-president for research and development of the Khalifa University of Science and Technology will deliver a lecture at the Higher School of Economics National Research University. The expert will speak on the global trends in the area of urbanization and on how important it is to create smart cities for the purposes of sustainable development. The lecture will be held in the framework of the Energy of Knowledge Program. The event will start at 14.00.
Dr. Steven Griffith is confident that urbanization is a megatrend, which will continue to be in the focus of the world economy development until the end of the 21st century. Currently, cities occupy only 2-3% of the land and at the same time accommodate 55% of the world population, producing around 80% of the world products, consuming approximately 66% of the global energy resources and discharging more than 70% of the carbon emissions into the atmosphere. It is expected that by 2050 about 70% of the Planet’s will live in cities, which is why the vector of their development will determine the course of development of the whole world.
During his lecture, the expert will pay special attention to the methods of research, development, demonstration and implementation of smart and sustainable technologies adapted to specific urban conditions. Taking as examples large cities in the UAE, Dr. Griffith will speak on how to use technological capabilities to create future cities and maintain their sustainable growth.
Dr. Steven Griffith supervises the work of the research and development institutes, laboratories and centres at the Khalifa University of Science and Technology. He is a member of the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee. On May 28, Dr. Griffith, jointly with his colleagues from the committee from 14 world countries, will determine the laureates of the Prize in 2019 at a relevant meeting.
