RECOGNISING OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS IN ENERGY

The Global Energy Prize annually honors outstanding achievements in energy research and technology from around the world that are helping address the world’s various and pressing energy challenges.

The Global Energy Association invites you to the first official press conference of the 2019 Global Energy Prize laureates

On October 1st, the first official press conference of the 2019 Global Energy Prize laureates, Frede Blaabjerg (Denmark) and Khalil Amine (USA) will be held at the TASS press center. For the first time, scientists will speak to Russian journalists about their developments that have been awarded the prize, and also share forecasts for the development of the energy industry. The event starts at 11.00. Accreditation is required.

The 2019 Global Energy Prize laureates are engaged in the development of technologies in areas related to solving infrastructure problems in the energy sector - issues of energy transfer and storage, which are especially acute issues in the renewable energy generation segment.

Danish professor Frede Blaaberg, an expert in the field of power electronics, became the laureate in the nomination "Non-traditional energy ". The Global Energy Prize is awarded to him “for outstanding technical contributions to the design of power management systems enabling the integration of renewable power”. In the 1990s, he made a number of inventions in the field of variable speed drive technology, and today they are regularly applied in wind turbines, and allow for rational generation of electricity, saving tens of millions of dollars a year.

American professor Khalil Amine has won in the nomination “New ways of energy application”. He is the world record holder in the number of publications on the topic of rechargeable batteries. The prize was awarded to him “for outstanding contribution into the development of the efficient electrical energy storage technology". His studies are related to the creation of new cathodes and anodes for lithium-ion batteries, participated in the development of new liquid-polymer electrolyte systems, lithium-oxygen, lithium-sulfur, sodium-ion batteries. Battery cells developed by him are used by many corporations: BASF, Envia, LG Chemical, Microvast, Samsung Chemical, TODA, Umicore. Not so long ago, Dr. Amine developed a new superoxide battery system capable to yield up to five times more energy than lithium-ion batteries. This discovery gave impetus to a new round of research aimed at increasing the energy density of batteries and reducing costs, which should lead to a sharp increase in the number of electric vehicles in the future.

Rae Kwon Chung, the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee Chairman, UN Secretary-General’s High-level Expert and Leaders Panel (HELP) on water and disasters, Adviser to the Chair. Member of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, will also participate in the press conference. The expert will talk about the innovations of the laureates in the field of energy storage and transmission and how they will help to meet global challenges in the energy sector and achieve sustainable development in accordance with the UN SDGs.

To participate in the event were also invited heads of companies - members of the Global Energy Association: General Director of «Surgutneftegas» PJSC Vladimir Bogdanov, Chairman of the Management Committee of Gazprom Alexey Miller, Chairman of the Management Board of FGC UES, PJSC Andrey Murov.

The press conference will be held on October 1st at TASS Press Center (second floor), Tverskaya Boulevard, Building 2. The event starts at 11.00.
