The Global Energy Association took an active part in the 24th World Energy Congress, which was held from September 9th to 12th in the capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi. The Association held its own session, presented a stand, which was highly praised by the Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation Aleksandr Novak. The Association delegated its experts to participate in key discussions of the forum, held a number of meetings, negotiations, interviews, signed two cooperation agreements and organized a series of life-shows, designed to demonstrate the main achievements of the Global Energy Prize.

The key event of the Global Energy Association in the framework of the 24th World Energy Congress was its own session, “Mission possible: the Global Energy Prize as a driver for sustainable energy for all”. During the session, experts from the UK, Hungary, Russia, Korea, and the UAE discussed ways of achieving of sustainable energy and came to the conclusion that is it possible to provide current and future generations with clean energy resources without harming the environment. But to accomplish this crucial task, a deep transformation of the global energy system will be required.  It, in turn, implies the development of a technological base, the unified political will of states and effective international cooperation.

The presentation of the Global Energy Association’s stand to the Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation Aleksandr Novak became another important event. During the visit of the Global Energy Association’s stand, Aleksandr Novak noted the quality of representation of the Association at such large international forum as the World Energy Congress. The head of the Global Energy Association, Aleksandr Ignatov, discussed with the Minister the official agenda of the Association at the Congress and invited him to the Global Energy Prize Award Ceremony on October 3 during the Russian Energy Week, as well as to a reception in honor of the new laureates. Oleg Budargin, Chairman of the Global Energy Association’s Board of Trustees; Vice-Chairman of the World Energy Council, thanked the Minister for the full support of the project. Aleksandr Novak also welcomed Rodney John Allam, the 2012 Global Energy Prize laureate, Rae Kwon Chung, the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee Chairman, Marta Bonifert, the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee Member.

Regarding the business program of the forum, experts from the Global Energy Association took part in a number of key discussions of the Congress. Rodney John Allam, the 2012 Global Energy Prize laureate, member of the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee, took part in a session on the topic of deep decarbonization of the global energy system, where he presented his vision of new strategies for zero emissions of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. The expert also acted as a jury member in an interactive session on the evaluation of startup projects. He gave recommendations to the authors of projects how to grow a successful business from a startup, attract first investments and stay in the market. Rae Kwon Chung, Chairman of the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee, member of the IPCC, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007, has become one of the key speakers of the session: “Energy, water, food: an ecosystem on the cusp”. The expert raised the topic of the need for urgent actions to maintain energy, food and water security. On the parallel session Sun Xiansheng, Member of the Global Energy Prize Award Committee, Secretary General of the International Energy Forum (IEF) presented his vision on ways to maintain and strengthen energy security.

During the all days of work at the World Energy Congress, the presentation of the report “Energy Transition. Energy in the new technological cycle” was being held at the Global Energy Association’s stand. It should be noted that the Association`s report “Grand Transition. Energy in the new technological cycle” was formed following the results of the VIII Global Energy Prize Summit, held in 2019 in Germany. The key topics of the report were the search for solutions for the transition to a new cycle and ways to achieve safe, reliable, affordable (financially and physically) energy, as well as the requirements for sustainable development of the energy sector and the impact of the 4th industrial revolution on the industry. A number of its authors made their keynote presentations on various topics of the report: Rae Kwon Chung, the Chairman of the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee; Rodney John Allam, the 2012 Global Energy Prize laureate, member of the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee; Marta Bonifert, the Global Energy Prize International Award Committee member; Sergey Alekseenko, the 2018 Global Energy Prize laureate.
